Quite a Bride and My Girls!

Here is a photo of Quite A Bride taken by Vanessa Ng in 2006 when QB was a young thing. She is a Florida-bred thoroughbred, just like Violet and was born a handful of days after Violet, on March 12, 2003. They are very closely related, as you can tell in this photo.

QB is a turf girl. She has a solid career with a 18: 10-1-4 record, and setting a new Churchill Downs track record on turf at 8.5 furlongs timed at 1:40.70. In late January of this year, her 5th year of racing, she won easily against Nashoba'sKey who was a finalist for the 2007 Eclipse Award for Turf. In this race, the $500,000 Sunshine Million Filly and Mare Turf race at Santa Anita track, she stalked behind the pacesetter SomethinaboutLaura until she was ready to let it roll. NB never really was a contender. She now has $878,881 in earnings!

As her jockey Garret Gomez said, "She placed herself well, like she does in all her races. In the middle of the turn, she hit another gear and I said, 'Let's go.'"

Her parents are Stormy Atlantic and Wise Bride by Blushing Groom. So, Blushing Groom is QB's grandsire on her dam's side and is V's great-grandsire on her sire's side. What's also cool about QB is that because of the Stormy Atlantic parentage, she also has Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Northern Dancer, and Moccasin in her. What a powerful girl!

Queen Elizabeth II Visits Kentucky (Again!)

Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, is too cool! When she came to the states this spring, she stayed in the Lexington area to visit friends and to watch the Kentucky Derby. She had a private box overlooking the finish line, so she could watch Street Sense win. Then, because she's so hip, she invited the winning jockey, Calvin Borel, to a white tie state dinner at the White House on the Monday following the Derby. How cool is that? Mr. Bush thinks of that white tie dinner as the most important of his presidency! But that's not all. HRH Queen Elizabeth visited family back in 1984. Her father, King George VI, bred Knight's Daughter, but sold her to Claiborne Farms. She had been a speedy sprinter, but he sold her. She was bred to Violet's relative, Princequillo, and the result was Round Table. Round Table raced 66: 43 - 8 -5 and earned $1,749,869. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972, was voted #17 on the Blood Horse Top 100 of the 20th century list, was voted U.S. Horse of the Year in 1958, and Leading Sire in North America in 1972. He was U.S. Champion Turf Horse in 1957, 1958, and 1959. And he was U.S. Champion Male Handicap Horse in 1958 and 1959. He was a leading broodmare sire for a loooong time. He was amazing because he got the best traits from both his mom, the sprinter, and his dad, the distance runner. Speaking of magic, he was born on the same farm and the same day as Bold Ruler, another very important race horse and stud! Some of Round Table's important matings were with Moccasin, a very important racing filly! Anyway, back to the Queen. When she visited the States in 1984, she asked to be taken especially to visit and pay her respects to the elder statesman, Round Table. She asked to visit her family! She must have been wanting to see Knight's Daughter's baby! He died at the age of 33, a few years later in 1987 and is buried at Claiborne Farm. Anyway, you know I think the Queen is cool! When she comes to the states, she goes to visit her friends in Lexington, including her horsey friends. What a lady!

Moccasin and My Girls!

My girls are related to Moccasin, a champion racing filly and broodmare! Moccasin was born in 1963, just like me, and she looks so much like Violet. She was a chestnut with two white hind socks and a white fore sock on the left side. Here is a picture of her grandchild K One King that she produced through her son Apalachee out of Round Table. Moccasin is considered a Blue Hen, having produced 9 foals, with 8 runners, 7 winners, and 7 stakeswinners! She is in many good blood lines, and is even the third dam of Hail Atlantis. Her notable kids include Apalachee (of course) and Indian, Nantequo, Brahms, Belted Earl, Scuff, and Flippers. Her own race record was so good at age 2 that she was voted co-Champion U.S. Horse of the Year -- the only time a 2 year-old filly took such an honor. She was also voted U.S. Champion 2 year-old filly. She was bred by and raced for Claiborne, and ran her races so convincingly that they looked like easy victories by a wide margin. She had 8 undefeated races in a row. Her final record was 21: 11-2-4 for a total earnings of $388,075. She was so good that the Moccasin Stakes in Hollywood Park were named after her. Her sire was Nantallah out of Nasrullah and her dam was Rough Shod. Here's something interesting -- her full-sibling is Ridan, the horse that Violet's relation, Jaipur, defeated in the famous match race the Travers Stakes. This girl is buried at Marchmont Farms in Paris, Kentucky. She is related to my girls in many ways, including the following: Nasrullah, Blandford, Isinglass, Stimulus, Sir Gallahad, Commando, Orme, Ormonde, Love Wisely, and St. Simon. My picks for the Kentucky Derby 2007!

Here are my picks for this Saturday's Derby! 1) Stormello; 2) Zanjero; 3) Liquidity; 4) Curlin. My top 3 picks are all 30-1 longshots, but I think they are just lovely. Stormello has Blushing Groom, as well as Stormy Atlantic as the sire. Stormy Atlantic has Hail Atlantis who has a grand-dam of Moccasin through Flippers. Here's what's cool about that -- Blushing Groom is of course Violet's relation AND I saw Stormy Atlantic in the breeding shed last year in 2006 when Tom took Carla and me on a shed run one early morning in April! Also, what's cool is that he is ridden by a jockey from Maurice, LA who used to run at Evangeline Downs (I've been there -- it's where I told this young boy which horse I had picked to win and he looked up at me and said, "Not today.") Zanjero is related to Violet even more with Runaway Groom, Dame Francesca, War Admiral and Princequillo. He also has a splash of Secretariat. And Liquidity has the wonderful Blushing Groom! It'll be so wonderful to see my first Derby with my family running! Here's a photo of Stormello -- all red and pretty like my Violet!

Nicanor -- Barbaro's Baby Brother

Next week is the Kentucky Derby and another champion will run into the history books. This photo is taken from a really neat link by a gentleman named John who writes his thoughts about various issues facing horses around the world. I encourage you to go to his link which I post below. He is really an engaging thinker and has grown with a true appreciation for the importance of horses. Anyway, he was writing about "catching lightning in a bottle" and whether one could recapture the magic of any particular horse. He was mentioning how everyone has high hopes for Nicanor here, Barbaro's full-brother out of Dynaformer and La Ville Rouge. He talked about a few famous full-siblings in history, mentioning Ridan and Moccasin. You'll remember that Ridan was a famous horse who was beat in a match race in the Travers Stakes by Violet's relative Jaipur. I'll be writing about Moccasin, his champion sister, in a few weeks. He then mentioned Secretariat and his two full-sibling sisters. Secretariat's one sister, Syrian Sea won 2 graded stakes as a 2-year-old and became a great broodmare. Of his other sister, The Bride, his owner Penny Chenery said, "She couldn't beat a fat man running downhill." I got a big kick out of that. Anyway, visit John's site. He has an unusual point of view, a taste for travel, a respect for horses of all types and stripes, and a real perspective on social justice with animals. Namaste!!
