Violet's Birthday!

This morning I woke up and made headbobbers -- molasses, oats, carrots and apples from the Farmers Market, baked into a wonderful yummy horse treat! Then I went to the stable and groomed both my girls, lunged them, gossiped about the day. And Violet did her jumping today. She had three jumps including one made of straw bales. She was so disconcerted by the straw bales! But she was a brave, trying, bold girl. She loves a challenge and to learn and to please! I was so proud of her. And she was proud of herself. You should have heard her snort with relief and joy when she was done with her jumping. She stood their with happiness while she received her hugs and kisses. You would have thought she had just finished a double clean round at the stadium jumping day at Rolex! She's going to be a wonderful quiet lovely hunter!

And we also sang Violet happy birthday because tomorrow is her big day! She was born on International Women's Day! She is going to be 5 years old! She was born on March 8, 2003 to her parents Groomstick and Wining Effort by Two's a Plenty. I am so proud to own this wonderful, strong, athletic, sweet, smart thoroughbred. So glad to have her as part of my family. I pray that I am able to keep her and care for her all the days of her life. Namaste and love to Velvet Tenderness.

Yagrumo, Violet's Half-brother

Here is a photo of Yagrumo, Violet's half-brother. He was born in 1998 to Groomstick and Women in Uniform by Double Sonic. He even has a little splash of Ta Wee on his dam's side. He's had kind of a hard-working race horse's life. He is recorded as racing from ages 2 through 6, for a total of 61 races, and a career of 5-17-12. Poor tired Champion.

He raced in Puerto Rico his entire life. I can't find information about him now, but one can only hope that he's earned the right to sire children and rest on beautiful green pastures! He earned $267,342 and is owned by J.M. Stable.

He's sexy, just like my little Vi!

Useeit and My Girls!

So, check this out! One of Hailee's relatives has a book written about her, called Black Gold by the famous Marguerite Henry! Useeit by Bonnie Joe and Effie M was a 1907 thoroughbred mare who is now rumored to have been a Quarter horse and who was dragged all over the West, Mexico and Louisiana to race for Al and Rosa Hoots. She produced the 1924 Kentucky Derby winner, Black Gold, via Black Toney, but he was sterile, poor thing, which ultimately led to his untimely death on the Fairgrounds track in New Orleans.

But, his full brother, Beggar Boy, is Hailee's relative on her mom's side, Docs Blue Rock Dawn. Beggar Boy is the sire of 4 AQHA Race ROMS and 20 AQUA daughters producing ROMS.

Violet is not related to Useeit, but has her boyfriend, Black Toney in several lines in her Dame Francesca line on her dad's side, Groomstick!

I am definitely treating myself to the read of Black Gold again. I remember that fabulous book as a child, and now I am a lucky woman who has a family member from that great American family tree in my pedigree!

Kentucky 2007: Claiborne's During!

Here is a photo of During, standing at stud at Claiborne Farms. He is very closely related to Violet. His dad is Cherokee Run who stands at stud at the Darley Stud. Cherokee Run is the 3/4ths brother of Violet's dad, Groomstick. They share the same dad, Runaway Groom, and then the same granddam on their mom's side -- Dame Francesca. During's dam is Blazing Saddle by Blade. Blade is a stud who is a Bold Ruler -- Nasrullah kid and who also has what Violet has -- the Nasrullah/Princequillo sires of sire/dam crosses that lots of horses related to Secretariat luckily have!
In these photos, you can see that During is all lazy on a cool Kentucky morning and he has to suffer the indignity of showing his racing tattoo on his upper lip! What a cutie pie!

His career record is 22: 6-3-4. He is the #2 Top Earner for his dad, right behind the filly Chilluki and right before Zanjero. At 3, he won the Swaps Stakes, Jerome Handicap, and Discovery Handicap, and took second in the Sir Barton Stakes. At 4, he won the San Fernando Breeders Stakes. So, he knows what it is to stand in the winners circles with his jockey, trainer and loving family. What a good boy. You can read about his sister, Chilukki, at the following link:

Violet's Beautiful Grandpa Euthanized on June 8

Violet's grandpa on her sire's side is Runaway Groom, a 1979 stallion born in Ontario, Canada who had an illustrious career. He was euthanized at his home at Dr. Tom Simon's Vinery near Lexington on June 8, 2007. He lived at The Vinery, working as the king of stallions since 1991. His racing career was 18:6-5-1, and among his achievements, he won the Travers Stakes, and 2/3rds of the Canadian Triple Crown, including the Prince of Wales and Breeders Stakes. He was the 1982 Champion 3-year-old male in Canada and was elected to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2001. He sired 123 stakes horses, 72 stakes winners, and 31 graded stakes winners, including millionaires Wekiva Springs, Down the Aisle, and Najran who currently holds the American record for a mile (1:32 1/5). Runaway Groom sired not only Violet's Groomstick, but the fabulous Cherokee Run.

When he passed, he was 28 years old and had been pensioned from his siring duties since late February. When his caretakers realized that he was uncomfortable, even with medication, they decided to euthanize this champion. His Stallion Manager who cared for him for over a decade said, "Runaway Groom was a great horse with a great personality. Even at his age, he was the toughest horse in the barn to handle. He was the King around here, and he knew it. We are all saddened by his passing -- it's truly the end of an era." He is now buried in the Courtyard of the Stallion Complex at the Vinery.

I invite you to view the youtube link below. It shows this dear stallion at the age of 27, just last year, when he was sassy, gorgeaus, sexy and still the man about the walk! You can also read more about him at the other links as well.

Ocala, Florida -- Horse Capitol of the World!!

Ocala, Florida, a town in Marion County is the central location for horse farms! There are over 1,200 horse farms in this small area with over 600 thoroughbred farms. The land in the area is similar to Kentucky Blue Grass! Ocala is also on the Western leg of the Dixie Highway. It has become famous because it is producing world class competitors, including 1956' Kentucky Derby winner, Needles, and the 1978 triple crown winner, Affirmed. The U.S. Department of Agriculture calls Ocala the "Horse Capitol of the World!" Violet's daddy, Groomstick, lived there right before he was sent to New Mexico, and it's the region where my darling Violet was bred and born! In fact, Violet's papers came through the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company! Ocala has many of the best horses on earth! And it has some of the best world class equestrian facilities on earth. You can read more about Violet's home at the following links:

Thoroughbred Breeding

This information about thoroughbred foal crops is from the April 27, 2007 New York Times. In 2004, 34,642 thoroughbred foals were registered. Kentucky produced 28.3% of that foal crop with 9,815 foals. The other big producing states were Florida (12.9%), California (10.9%), New York (5.8%), Louisiana (5.5%) and Texas (5.0%). Ohio produced 1.4% of the foals and New Mexico, where Violet's daddy now lives, produced 2.3%. In 2005, 23,674 of the yearlings from that 2004 crop went into race training. Yearling auctions accounted for 29% of the 2004 registered foal crop sales. There were 1,952 weanlings sold in 2004, as compared to 10,088 yearlings sold in 2005. In 2006, when they were 2, many of them began their race careers. 10,390 from the 2004 foal crop raced an average of 3.2 times, during their second year. And now in 2007, 20 of that initial crop of 34,642 registered foals were successful nominees for the Derby. They chose the top 20 money earners from graded stakes races. The entrance and start fees for the Derby total $50,000 with an additional $200,000 nomination fee for the Triple Crown. Entrance fees are applied toward the prize money for the top four finishers. The nations best stakes races are graded from I through III.

So, what does this mean for Violet? Violet was born in Florida on March 8, 2003 -- International Women's Day! I *think* she passed through an auction at one point because an envelope that came with her birth certificate and Coggins Test is from the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company. Her daddy, Groomstick, was in his last year as a Florida stallion. Her owner was tentatively calling her Watch For Me which is an adorable name and I really like it, but my cousin, Jane, and I chose Velvet Tenderness instead. Out of almost 35,000 foals born that year, Violet was my magic one -- getting ready to come to me! She was going to be someone's hunter prospect, but now she's meant to be my pampered backyard pony.

Violet's Grandpa, Runaway Groom! -- Canadian Triple Crown Winner!

Violet's grandpa on her daddy's side is Runaway Groom, a 1979 sire who currently is at stud at the Vinery in Lexington, Kentucky. His 2007 stud fee is $12,500! He is 28 years old, and when he raced, he raced 18, won 6, placed 5, and showed 1. He won the Breeders Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Prince of Wales Stakes. The latter two were Grade 1 Stakes. In fact, by winning the Queens Plate, Prince of Wales and Breeders Stakes at Woodbine, he became the Canadian Triple Crown Winner! He has so-far foaled over 1,000 babies with 22 foal crops, with 139 stakes horses, 54 graded stakes horses, and 13 record setters. Four of his children have become millionaires on the race track. His son, Violet's daddy, Groomstick is #6 of Runaway Groom's top 10 race-earning children. He is considered a precious, if under-appreciated stud. Currently, he is ranked #20 nationally as preferred stud, and in Kentucky he is currently ranked #13. Last year's 2006 breeding season, he finished with the national rank of 78! Not so bad!!! There are a million different ways to rank him though -- producer of dirt track horses, milers, sprinters, etc. In 2006, he was often in the Top 5 on many of these lists. And he is very popular as a stud in New York, Florida and the Southeast region. See how sexy he is in his racing photo?! What a hottie! So, he is 28 years-old and there are some experts who perceive him as very precious. One Reines-de-Course pedigree analyst said that "Nasrullah-line sires are precious to us at this point in the history of breeding." Specifically, of Runaway Groom, this analyst said, "If you're lucky enough to have some of this bloodline, do work it properly and try to keep it alive. It's really pretty precious stuff." You can read more about him and his famous children at the following links:
or
or
and take a look at one of his boys, a 2000 stud named The Lady's Groom. He's hilarious because he looks like the boy version of my very girly Violet!!
or you can even watch him winning the Travers Stakes at the following link. After he won the Canadian Triple Crown, his owner sent him to America to kick some butt here. It's very exciting because he is in last place the entire race and then suddenly comes from behind in the last turn -- he beats the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes winners for that year! They were all entered in that race. What a stud muffin!
You can also read about him at the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame! They are very proud of him. So, hey you, Elena. Violet's grandpa can be a trick question for the "Dead or Canadian" game!

Violet's Dad, Groomstick!!

Violet's dad, Groomstick, out of the famous Runaway Groom, has had a very busy life. He is so famous that his name has been permanently retired by The Jockey Club! Here are his racing colors, he was a patriotic young man! He was born in 1986, and raced for 6 years between 1988 and 1993!!! He was raced 82 times!!! He earned 19 firsts, 9 seconds, and 8 thirds. He was an 11X stakes winner and earned $668,510 in his life. He was one of the top-earning babies in his own dad's life! Among his own children, Violet's siblings, he has foaled 5 stakes winners and his children have earned in excess of $7.2 million dollars!! He's had kind of a tough life lately -- I couldn't find a picture of him anywhere. He's been sort of bouncing around from stud farm to stud farm and his stud fee is dropping as he ages. He bounced around from sale to sale, then he bounced from claiming race to claiming race, until he started winning stakes races! He has been at stud farms in Florida, Arkansas and New Mexico. He moved to New Mexico in 2004. He serviced 10 mares in 2006, so he is still working. Here are the races he won: Gulfstream Park Sprint Championships; Banyan Handicap; Sunny Isle Handicap; Plantation Handicap (twice); Tamarac Handicap; Sunny Isle Handicap; Miami Beach Handicap; Melreese Handicap; Jupiter Handicap; and City of Miami Stakes. When he finally, poor thing, was retired from the track, he was sent to Florida to crash. I am including a blog from one of the people who passed through his life -- she tells how he was practically crippled when his painkillers and pain blockers wore off -- his front ankles had so many chips that they fused. The following links provide the blog story of his very precarious life and the New York Times story obituary for one of his owners, Gardner Landon. In the Blog, the lady talks about how Groomstick who was very crippled was a very kind patient babysitter to the new weanlings -- I'm not surprised to read that he is a sweet, hard-working boy. My Violet is wonderful; he'd be proud of his baby! If you ever find a picture of Groomstick, please send it to me!
