My Boy in Training!
Here's a late February photo of my boy, goofing around with ropes, causing trouble and enjoying himself. I am writing this note on Sunday, March 7th after a very busy horse week. Renny was worked under saddle practicing his lunging and giving and trotting in hand. I was so proud of him. And today I saw him in a new pasture, the one right next to his and he was out with 4 other boys. Well, he was running in the bright warm sun with Budha and Ollie and they were harassing him. So, my smart boy flashed his back hooves in a very commanding fashion and the two nutters ran off and left him unmolested. I talked with Stacey about it and she and I laughed because he is learning how to take care of himself and handle his business!

Kentucky 2010: William Fox-Pitt Warming Up
Here's a happy shot I took at the finish line of Rolex of William Fox-Pitt and Cool Mountain warming up for the cross country. The man is just a giant. You can get some idea of how tall and big this man is by the fact that his horse is 16.3 hh! Cool Mountain is related to Violet through the usual suspects, but what's also super is that this elegant horse is related to Bold Ruler, considered one of the best sires of all time and the daddy to Secretariat!

An Early Morning Appraisal of the Snow
Zelia and I had many early mornings like this one this past winter. She would wait patiently for her breakfast while I shoveled the walk for our mailman! I did lots of winter walking this year through that snow because my car was in the shop for 4 weeks of the 6 weeks in January through mid-February. Lots of snowy crunchy walking!

My Sweetest Renny
Here's a photo and video taken on February 25th, a Thursday. You can see my darling boy happy at the gate, looking at his Grandma with love and understanding and acceptance. I can say that every time I show up, he looks for me and comes to the gate in a swift eager purposeful gait. He is looking for Grandma Time! Anyway, last week was amazing. He's been super good about everything I ask him to do. He's wearing his saddle and agreeable about tight cinching. He's good. So, I put his saddle on and we went out to lunge for the first time cinched. And he walked and trotted as calm as you please, in his usual agreeable way. So, I asked for a canter, and he just cantered off as sweet and calm as you please. He's a champion for sure! Stacey asked me whether he had ever ever balked at something I asked him to do and I laughed with happiness when I reported that the very first time that we worked to lunge him, Renny was unimpressed with his work! But that was just a flash of a moment. He's got a good work ethic and a loving attitude toward his Grandma. I think that he thinks that we're just playing and socializing and rising to challenges together when I take him into the arena. He likes the routines. He gets love and treats. He goes into the arena and takes a good hard industrious roll as though he were digging through the dirt to China. He gets chased around by Grandma as he jets around with his tail held high. He stops and snorts and turns toward Grandma with his ears pricked forward. He gets love showered and rained all over his handsome head. And then he does a few tasks to prove what a smart good loving talented pony he is and all this is followed with more praise, more love, more treats. He likes his training sessions plenty well! ;)

My Good Violet
I am writing this entry on March 1st of a day which has the strong hint of spring on it. Here is a photo and video from last week with my Violet. My poor Violet has been working her tail off! She gets ridden four times a week by me and she's been put into training with Stacey once a week. I have to admit that I am feeling a bit frustrated right now because I can just see that Violet is trying really really really hard to be light and give and responsive. But I continue to be heavy-handed and fumbling. I just know that I'm hurting her and being unkind. I've decided to back it up a few steps and not make every ride a total training ride working on the new -- and instead some playful working on what we're good at and love. Right now I am struggling with the Black Dog, with depression, so I am having a hard time thinking that I'm a good person. My anxiety is coming out in thinking that I'm a bad person toward my pets. But here she is, in this photo, and she doesn't look disagreeable or upset about being my girl. And in fact, soon after this photo, she was putting those lips on my clothes and on my hands and on my face in an agreeable little frisking of love. She's a good girl. A really good girl.

Snow Days Galore!
I am writing this entry on March 1st of a beautiful warm sunlit blue-skyed day. The winter snow looks chunked and iced and like its days are numbered! But here are some photos from February. We've had a very snow-filled winter which has been beautiful and serene. I don't like to admit it, but I even have liked shovelling because the snow has always been that light gorgeaus fluffy snowfall that's divine to handle. We've been lucky. And as I write this entry, I am happy to report that last week, I ordered my summer seeds and got lots of vegetables, of course, but also many entries for the butterfly and hummingbird and finch garden!
Kentucky 2010: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's State Carriage
The video shows those crazy pony finalist mounts and then this picture shows Hackney ponies pulling Franklin Delano Roosevelt's state carriage. I was very excited about seeing that carriage. It was brought special because the lady who has been directing Rolex from the beginning was retiring from her role and they wanted to really show her honor.

Relaxing Together
d Here again is a video taken on my birthday in 2007. I was practicing with my new toy because I was getting ready for Renny's extensive media coverage at birth!
Kentucky 2010: The Great Cigar!
Here's the king, Cigar! He is alive and well and voguing at the Kentucky Horse Park! He won multiple Eclipse Horse of the Year Awards and was number 1 in lifetime earnings until Curlin surpassed him (with the larger modern day purses) in 2008. And now his amazing record of 16 straight victories is tied by the lovely lady, Zenyatta. I almost cried when I see this big boy! Among the relatives Violet shares with him are Turn-To, Princequillo, Count Fleet and War Admiral. Hailee even shares in a little of Cigar through her almost blind Kentucky-Derby-winning relative, Bubbling Over! Rock on herd!

Kentucky 2010: Captain Curran of Ireland at Start
Here is a photo and video from the start of the cross-country event. Here you see Captain Geoffrey Curran of Ireland on his mountThe Jump Jet getting ready to leave for a hard fast run. And what's amazing is the horse was just standing as quiet and calm as you please. He was just waiting for his permission to rock. it. out. He is an Irish Draught Sport Horse born in 1998!

Kentucky 2010: Cooling Off after Cross Country
Okay, I like this photo and the video because it shows the station where the equine athletes retreat after their cross-country run. They are hosed and iced and checked and loved. The riders stand by talking with staff about the ride. And there's that gorgeaus black horse who looks like Jimmy. He was hilarious. He stood calmly and like he knew he was an earthbound angel, something divine. And then every once in awhile, he'd lift his back leg just to let people know they were bothering him or not doing some task right. I wish I had one of those buckets -- they are Cosequin buckets for a joint supplement and they were literally everywhere at Rolex!
