In the 19th century, it was estimated that there were over 2 million horses roaming wild in the United States, direct descendants of the Spanish mustangs brought over from the conquistadors. Now there are only a few hundred left who are being over-grazed, over-drugged, and are so few in number that their genetic diversity and fitness is in peril. Ginger Kathrens, a Bowling Green native and Emmy award-winning documentarian has explored the life of Cloud, a wild horse from Montana. I was lucky enough to meet her and have lunch with her, along with my colleague and buddy, Joe Jacoby, on a day BGSU celebrated her accomplishments.
